DOOM · MINI MARINE

I think I created a monster when I did the first weapon intro/inspection for RAGE, because practically everything you pickup up in DOOM has an inspection animation. Originally, this guy just needed a standard bringup and look at. However, when I got the model from Denzil O'Neill, it looked so cool that I wanted to rig it so that he could be animated like a full character. Once I was done I made a few quick poses with mini weapons to show what could be done with this guy. Peter Sokal, the designer that requested the pickup animation, suggested if there was time, maybe I could do a fist bump animation for when you find the one that matches your armor. I thought this was a really cool idea and made that animation first even though there really wasn't a lot of time to be working on this little guy with all of the other work needing to get done. The fist bump was good, but once I stepped back and looked at my blocking, it needed a little something extra. None of this work was required, the rigging, the extra animations, the fist bump, but, I really wanted it to be cool and memorable, so I stayed till midnight that night in order to get it done and not fall behind. This animation was almost removed from the game, but I'm glad I left it in. I would have liked to get him animated in the game and running around as well, but we just ran out of time. I was able to get him in the credits though at the very last minute...
