DOOM · GLORY KILLS & PLAYER DEATHS

Glory Killing staggered enemies was one of the main features of DOOM pioneered by my lead Sheen Hara and one of our senior animators Brian Kowalczyk. These animations ended up getting faster and faster as they were tuned throughout production. Many times they were less than two seconds. I didn’t do too many of these, mostly early zombie kills. I also remember playing LIMBO early in production as well and talking about how if you died, you were sort of rewarded with these great animations they did. I think that was a bit of the inspiration for our player deaths. We didn’t go too deep on that. I ended up doing two. The zombie, which I never thought anyone would get killed by, and the revenant. The revenant animation here was actually done for the QuakeCon2014 demo and I later converted it into a death which could be played from anywhere.
